Brazilian beauty leaf tree description

The Calophyllum brasiliense tree, otherwise known as the Brazilian beauty leaf tree, belongs to the Calophyllaceae family. This species is native to Central and South America and is found in regions such as Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, and Brazil. It features an erect cylindrical trunk, an upright branching habit, and a dense round crown, reaching an average height of 45 feet and a considerable spread.

Calophyllum Brasiliense Tree

Known for its ample spread and densely foliated appearance, the tree has leathery, 4-inch leaves that are darker above and paler below. Arranged oppositely and elliptical to obovate, these smooth and glossy leaves contribute to the tree’s beautiful, lush-green foliage. The Brazilian Beauty Leaf Tree also boasts small, creamy-white, fragrant flowers on 1- to 2-inch-long racemes, and its round fruits mature from green to brown, each bearing a single seed for propagation. The bark of Calophyllum is almost black and longitudinally furrowed, peeling off in small rectangular flakes to reveal an aromatic reddish inner bark similar to that of the mahogany tree.

The Calophyllum brasiliense tree thrives in wet, humid sites, including sandy and limestone soils. Grown for its attractive wood, which is durable in contact with soil and water, the wood is used for both outdoor and indoor construction. As an ornamental tree, it is ideal for various landscaping sites, showcasing its evergreen foliage and flowers, plus it provides good shade.

Brazilian Beauty Leaf Tree Landscape Application

In Florida, Calophyllum trees are favored for landscape applications, particularly as ornamental trees, screens, or windbreaks. Their resilience makes them a top choice for privacy hedges, whether pruned in a formal hedge or grown naturally.

These fast-growing evergreens tolerate a range of soil types and conditions, from full sun to partial shade, and are highly drought-tolerant. Their hardiness is especially beneficial in South Florida and the Caribbean, where strong winds and hurricanes are common.

The Brazilian beauty leaf tree is also popular in parks and public spaces and is a preferred choice for paths and walkways.
